______________
"Passagens" (2001), by Marcos Branda Lacerda (1954), has the bass clarinet and the vibraphone as characters, used in the most diverse possibilities in the construction of a subtle and refined texture that seeks a certain dramatisation of sonorous gestures. It begins with a chord, or even better, with fixed pitches over which the instruments almost improvise creating repeated and varied short motifs, reproducing a musical impression of extreme fluidity. The delicate sonorous fabric is developed gradually, punctuated by trills, appoggiaturas and small gestures that colour and ornament, leading to points of tension and exasperation in which certain intervals are insistently repeated. In the middle of the piece, there appears a six notes motif extracted from “Wozzeck”, by Alban Berg, tied to the scene in the marsh, when the leading character returns to the place where he had once committed a crime. From then on, the musical discourse becomes more intense, reaching a series of repetitions of the same interval over an agitated rhythmic work. In the end, some of the piece’s moments are recalled in short flashes, until the clarinet’s last note fades. According to the composer, the general form of the piece is intermeshed with poetic reflections about musical construction, which escape censorship and is based upon imagination, in fleeing memories of other musical works.
