"Contrastes" (2001) crowns the much sought concision. This new piece for piano solo, almost twenty years after Ressonâncias, has as its main focus the exploration of contrasts, be it through dynamic, through articulations, through tempo or other parameters. Small fragments arise from variations of pitch sets and propose, each by itself, a particular character. This demands from the performer an extremely careful work of playing each fragment as singular, essentially dependent on a relativistic metric rigour as well as on a certain distance from traditional attitudes in piano performance. Therefore, Contrastes reveals to us more than just a piece for a single instrument; it places the listener before a “monologue” for a “voice” that, although very distant from human voice, as is the piano’s, is surprisingly capable of expressing it. In other words, the usual piano per- formance, impregnated by percussive gestures and bodily actions, gives way to a lyrical attitude much closer to vocality.
