In "Canções dos Dias Vãos 5" (1997), for amplified bass clarinet and percussion with two performers, Luiz Carlos Csekö (1945) also uses a partially indeterminate graphic writing. Instead of the traditional staff, the composer uses three lines to indicate the high, middle and low registers of the clarinet; there is hardly any recording of specific pitches in the score. Even the multiphonic effects – when an wind instrument produces chords – cannot be perceived accurately, since they produce notes that are not part of the tempered scale, together with noises that vary with each performance. The duration is suggested by vertical lines and the performer is required to play a series of musical actions more or less defined or else impro- vised during a certain interval of time. The piece includes elements of scenic language and searches for a dramatic quality in this interdisciplinary play of languages. In the musical elaboration, there is a well determined rhythmic element: the tolling of small drums typical of samba schools that imposes itself gradually throughout the performance until it is clearly exposed in the last moments of the piece. This rhythmic character, almost with a key gesture – in the theatrical jargon, almost a cliché gesture, appears also as an improvisation in which the two percussion players dialogue, intertwined by sections of even less determinate elements.
