"A Noite em Concha" (1994) foi uma encomenda do Arts Council of Great Britain. Como as peças anteriores, ela tem o mote (ou tema, ou “dínamo”...) principal na forma espiral/circular, mantendo como principal elemento de ligação “fazer sentido a partir de qualquer circunstância”. O que ela tem de característico é o jogo a partir de diversos entrelaçamentos de dois personagens principais: um deles claro, cristalino e “tônico”, o outro sombrio, denso e complexo. A “mão em concha” é aquele gesto com que aumentamos nossa orelha para aguçar a audição, ou para dizer que prestamos atenção. A “Noite na Concha” é uma lenda indígena que narra a seguinte peripécia acusmática: um casal de jovens possuía uma concha mágica ofertada pelo pajé para ser usada somente quando buscassem a intimi- dade. Seus amigos, intrigados com os sons provenientes dela, abriram a concha, deixando escapar uma enorme serpente negra e seus sons: a noite.

Para a realização do material sonoro o compositor tentou desenvolver programas que simulas- sem o efeito doppler, isto é, a percepção de modificações espectrais em sons que se movem rapidamente com relação ao nosso ponto de observação. (Exemplo de doppler: o som de buzinas de automóveis que “cai” ao passar por nós). Esse projeto foi abandonado quando o compositor se deu conta da sonoridade de uma pequena lâmina metálica vibrando no ar, voando entre dois microfones. Não era exatamente o efeito desejado, mas acabou sendo mu- sicalmente funcional. Menos realista e referencial que o doppler, convida a imaginação para um terreno mais abstrato. A estes sons (cujo ataque forte, na peça, é na verdade a inversão do momento no qual a lâmina interrompe seu vôo ao cair no chão acarpetado) misturam-se outros, resultados de filtragem em sons de pedras e cascalho rolando.

"A Noite em Concha" (1994) is a commission of the Arts Council of Great Britain. As in the previous pieces, the motto (or theme, or dynamo) is the spiral/ circle, and its main connection element is “to make sense from any circumstance.” Two of the main characters – one is crystal clear, a “tonic”, while the other is somber, dense and complex – are intertwined in several ways. The title “The Night in a Shell” refers also to the gesture of putting the hand to the ear to improve hearing or to mean you are paying attention to something, called “shell hand” in Portuguese. “A noite em concha” is an indigenous legend that narrates this acousmatic episode: a young couple had a magic shell offered by the medicine man, that was supposed to be used only when they sought intimacy. Their friends, however, were intrigued by the sounds they heard in the shell and opened it, thus releasing a huge black serpent and its sounds: the night. To develop the sound material, the composer worked with programs that simulate the Doppler Effect – the perception of spectral modifications when a sound source moves quickly in relation to the observer. (Example of the Doppler Effect: the sound of a car horn that “drops” when it goes past us.) This project was abandoned when he noticed the sound of a small metal sheet vibrating in the air, flying between two microphones. It was not exactly the desired effect, but it was musically functional. With less realism and reference than the Doppler Effect, it invites the imagination into more abstract fields. To those sounds (where the strong attack is actually an inversion of the moment when the metal interrupts its flight, falling on the carpet floor) others were added, resulting from filtering sounds of rocks and rolling pebbles.
